All metal consumer units are non-combustible. However the majority of cables and conduits that connect to them are flammable. This therefore necessitates the use of intumescent gaskets to seal them off in a fire. The intent of Regulation 421.1.201 emphasises the importance of containing any fire within the enclosure or cabinet and to minimise the escape of flames. This is as true of both metal and plastic consumer units.
This Intumescent strip will in the event of fire seal up cable entry points & the lining will contain the fire inside the consumer unit.
